As far as the flame wars on dorm lists though, I think it really depends on the dorm. People definitely try to one-up each other in how hard they are working. After trying to figure it out for a couple minutes someone who lives in the next dorm walked past, so I followed him in the hopes he was going home, which he was, so I eventually ended up back at my dorm.
